Skype: And the crappy browser addon

Posted by Tariq • Wednesday, December 3. 2008 • Category: Rants
I generally hate to update things which work just fine. There is usually very little reason to: the application is in use because the stability and feature set of the current version are good. Now I have used Skype for years (probably only using 20% of the available feature set) and I always loathed upgrading because it'll try and install a bunch of stuff I don't need. Which is bad, but installing utter crap now that's just not on. Take a look at what Skype's FireFox addon does to my links below.

Edit: Some advice for IE users.

  1. Sorry that you find it annoying – it does work well in the majority of cases, but sometimes gets a bit confused.

You can disable the Firefox extension by clicking its icon in the Firefox toolbar, or by removing it from Firefox entirely – there are more details on the Skype website.

I hope this helps. Please give me a shout if you have any other questions.
  2. Thanks for the reply Peter. I can see how the Firefox Extension gets confused, but my issue was that it got installed at all. Is there a way of stopping it from being installed while upgrading?
  3. HI Tariq,
Very sorry to hear about your problems with The Skype extension for Firefox. The above is a bug and we will make sure we fix it.
However, I would be very interested in knowing which version of the Firefox extension you are running. I hope and believe it is a rather old one, because I have not seen that kind of bug for a long time.

When you upgrade Skype we follow the following policy for upgrading the web add-ons (for IE and FF):

On your first Skype install the default is that an add-on for your default browser is installed (IE or FF) if you don't opt-out. If you make an active selection to opt-out the web add-ons should never be defaulted in again.

If you have a web add-on installed such as your (hopefully old) Firefox extension it will be upgraded when you upgrade Skype. We make lots of changes to improve the way phone numbers are recognized, minimize the impact we have on web pages and also ensure that we support all new versions of Firefox or IE.

If you are upgrading and have opted out then you it should NOT be installed again. If it is - that is a bug and we should fix it asap.

    Best regards

  4. Hello Peter,

I was using the "Skype extension for Firefox v2.2.0.102". I can't remember reproducible steps so it is possible I may have opted in by accident; however, the Skype extension in Firefox was disabled and when I upgraded Skype (itself) the Firefox extension was upgraded and enabled -- that's all I know for sure.

Say I have opted in, how do I opt out?

Thanks for taking the time to clarify what should be happening when upgrading.
  5. Hi Tariq,
You opt out by un-installing the extension. Un-installing is one of the actions that you can simply access from the Skype button in the top right corner of the browser.
Once that is done, the Skype setup should NOT install the Firefox extension again by default.

    Best regards

  6. Hello Peter,

Excellent and thanks for the further clarification.

    Regards,

    Tariq
